5 CRUCIAL QUESTIONS AGENCIES SHOULD ASK BEFORE GOING ON AMC’S “THE PITCH”.

As I sat and watched our ad agency on national television, my palms were sweaty and my stomach was in knots.  Had David Oakley and I made the right decision?  Was putting BooneOakley on AMC’s new reality TV series, “The Pitch” the most brilliant thing we had ever done?  Or the most foolish?

I read in Ad Age that many of the largest, most-respected and well-known agencies declined to be on the show for a host of reasons.  Did they know something we didn’t?  Did we make a hasty decision based on our egos?  Had we made a huge mistake?

We definitely weighed the pros and cons ahead of time.  We talked to everyone at our agency.  Interestingly, a couple of people were really camera shy and refused to be on it.  But most were very excited about it.  We even talked to a couple of people from WDCW (who had been on episode 1) to get their take on it.  They highly recommended doing it and allayed most of our fears.

For us, the pros far outweighed the cons.  First of all, as a small agency located far from Madison Avenue, we felt the exposure would give us a huge boost in awareness.  In many ways, BooneOakley is a challenger brand and building awareness is critical to our success.  In short, we have to try harder.  Being on “The Pitch” seemed like a great tool for getting our brand story out there in a big way.

So far, after the airing of our episode, the sentiments about our agency have been overwhelmingly positive.  Many have commented that we came across as very creative, nice and smart …which is always great to hear.  All in all, we are very pleased with the results.  But is “The Pitch” right for every agency?  Before you decide to put your agency in the national spotlight, ask yourself these 5 questions:

1.    Is your agency is run by Dr. Evil?
Large egos are amplified on television. Unenviable traits like selfishness, jealousy, arrogance, rudeness and hot-headedness are camera magnets.  If the leader(s) of your agency would make Omarosa look good, you should probably reconsider your TV debut.

2.    Does your agency have any secrets?
Many Mad Ave agencies turned down “The Pitch” for fear of revealing their “secret sauce”.  It’s more likely they were afraid of revealing more damaging secrets.  As Tracy Wong told us after his agency appeared on episode 1, “If you don’t have anything to hide, you’ll be fine.”  But, just like an interrogation, the camera lights have a way of revealing the truth.  And, according to Jack Nicholson, “You can’t handle the truth.”

3.    Do your employees hate you?
This is a trick question.  If your employees hate you, you are probably too egotistical and self-absorbed to even know it.  But, if you go on “The Pitch”, it will come out.  And then everyone in America will know it.  Including your current clients, potential clients and future employee candidates.  But, knowing you, you probably won’t care.

4.    Do you like ulcers and migraines?
Let’s face it, the pressure is enormous during any new business pitch.  But,
if you go on “The Pitch”, the pressures are multiplied exponentially.  In a normal pitch, you only have to “look good” for a 2-hour presentation.  In filming “The Pitch”, you have to look good for 10 days.  In a normal pitch, you’re presenting to a handful of clients.  On “The Pitch”, you’re presenting to a national TV audience.  Normal pitches take several months.  “The Pitch” only gives you 1 week.  If you don’t win a normal pitch, nobody knows or cares.  If you don’t win “The Pitch”, everyone knows …your mom, your cousins, your 597 facebook friends, the kid who bullied you in 3rd grade …everyone.  After a normal pitch, everyone moves on.  After “The Pitch”, there are reruns.

5.    Are your teeth white?
If not, you may want to have them whitened.  All the TV stars do it.

  1. 6) Can your agency come up with the 2nd best idea?

To win the pitch, your idea must be worse than the winner's. So far this trend has held true.

  2. There is no question that it was a great decision to be on the show. You guys came out as the winners to a huge majority of viewers, found fans like myself, and most likely, gained+++ potential clientele. Great post and Godspeed!

  3. John-
Of the first five clients, and the 9 agencies, yours probably came across the best. Although I have tremendous respect for WDCW, The Hive and now, The Ad Store- your shop seemed like somewhere everyone on my team would fit right in and be happy.
And- to do great advertising- happy helps.
As you know- we did predictions and reviews of every show- http://thenextwave.biz/tnw/the-pitch-on-amc/
We're 0-5 on picking the winners and proud of it.
There won't be a season 2- with the show pulling a 0.0 rating, but I think the biggest problem isn't the agencies that turned this down- but the lame clients that bought it up. I'm not sure what Studio Lambert was charging the clients for their 15 minutes of fame- but, it could have been better spent hiring anyone of the losing agencies and running a proper campaign.
Congrats for taking the risk and doing it. You've got a whole bunch of new fans- white teeth or not.

  4. I, for one, applaud your decision to be on the show. And although I was not very objective about who I wanted to win as I watched the show, I don't think anyone will argue that your agency did not come across exceptionally well (except for, perhaps, the unemployed student who has already posted).

I don't think the audience gets to see enough of the actual pitch to judge the presentations for ourselves. I know that, for instance, the first episode would lead you to believe that WDCW presented only one idea and that McKinney presented two ideas. We've since learned that was not the case at all. Like all reality shows, I think the footage is intentionally edited to keep the audience guessing. And although only four episodes have aired, it's easy to figure out that the agency who suffers the most setbacks, infighting, obnoxious behavior, presentation gaffes and other dysfunctions will prevail over the agency who appears to sail through the process with relative ease.

I genuinely hope that your participation in the show increases your agency profile and that more opportunities come your way!

    Sherry

P.S. I should mention that two of the four episodes held significant meaning for me. In episode one, McKinney (the first agency I worked at during and after college) went up against Tracy Wong (my closest ally and fiercest competitor when I attended the University of Oregon prior to moving to NC) so there was some interesting kismet at play there. In episode four, I found myself wishing I had followed the same path as you since you are doing exactly what I hoped I'd be doing today when we were at ECU together. I made different choices and find myself watching "The Pitch" with a touch of melancholy and a tinge of regret. You are my hero, John. And if you ever have the opportunity to talk to Tracy in the future, please tell him I said hello!

  5. Thanks to The Next Wave for reminding me that there have been five episodes, not four. I guess the doubling up of the Ad Store appearances threw me which, BTW, were heartbreaking to watch. Paul Cappelli deserved a better end to his storied career. I still think "Trash Can" was a great concept.

  6. BO I agree with the thoughts above BO should have won the popchips account hands down (if had one thought - I expected a bit more outrageous pitch ala falling bodies or muffins) alas I think BO would have done a great job - "year of pop"...then what?

I had some ideas watching the show - Where do you pop? pop you're it! popmobs, virtual poptag - love to know what you think of my pitch http://makehope.typepad.com/tiltingatwindmillsideas/2012/05/all-that-and-a-bag-of-chips-my-take-on-the-pitch-episode-4-popchips.html

  7. John, I'm very, very glad you made the decision to be on The Pitch. I DVR the show every week and watch it when I can, so I only saw your episode last night (May 29th).
It was so refreshing to see an agency with Integrity! I'm a graphic designer for a liquor distributor in Nashville, and I'm the only member of my 'team'. I get inspiration from The Pitch, and I got a huge dose from your episode.
I dream of one day being a part of a group like yours.
Seeing your participation in church brought tears to my eyes, much to my wife's enjoyment. We attend Lifechurch.tv in Hendersonville,TN, but in this line of business, I seldom meet other church goers.
Thank you for the inspiration! And if you ever feel the need for a new team member, let me know!
